HAWAII
BEACHES
"Our families thoroughly enjoyed our stay at your beach homes in Hilo. What tastefully appointed homes and what a fabulous location next to Richardson's Beach. Our clan - "ohana" of 17 split very comfortably between the two homes. Because your kitchens were so well furnished, we were able to share a couple of meals together as we planned our mother's service. The children and young adults loved swimming and snorkeling across the road - and the turtles! They were not around when we were growing up in the 50's and 60's... We appreciated all the snorkel gear, great pots and pans including a rice cooker & electic tea kettle (not available in our swank Kohala condo). I am sure we will all be recommending to others - your properties in Hilo - and will surely check into your other properties if we should be in the area. You run a 1st rate operation. Thanks again." -Pat R. and family, Minneapolis, MN

"Upon entering the house my 6 year old
son, who reluctantly left the Waikoloa Hilton earlier in the day, yelled
"This place rocks!" Initially he felt the house "rocked"
due to the DVD's and PlayStation. Eventually he looked up to appreciate
the view with the rest of us. From the living room, we saw dolphins
and whales, and a monk seal on the beach. Snorkeling was excellent,
even very close to the shore. Tidepools at Richardson Beach kept the
kids busy. We made lots of friends on the beach! Mahalo" -Kim,
Rich, Ariana, and Henry K., Amarillo, TX

"We had a marvelous time-
Sunny & Warm. The house is wonderful. Falling asleep to the sound
of the waves and tropical sounds & waking up to the fabulous view
- FANTASTIC! We enjoyed all the amenities of the house - like being
at home!" -Jerry and Agnes W., Seattle, WA

"We had a glorious 7
day stay at your beautiful home. It didn't rain once! We swam with
turtles, visited Volcanoes National Park, the botanical gardens, ate
sushi, swam in the tidal pools and just relaxed. Thank you Karri and
Matt for making us feel so at home!" - Carol, Don, Sara, and
Matt H., Olathe, KS

"What a wonderful place
for our office retreat! Turtles, Volcano, snow on top of Mauna Kea.
At night the stars are gorgeous. -The Office of Aesthetic Surgical
Arts, Eugene, OR

"We had a great time
last week at your Hilo house. It was lovely. And we were pleasantly
surprised by the outstanding snorkeling across the street at Richadson's.
Everyone said Kona had the best snorkeling, but we found Richardson's
to be just as good. And the climate - marvelous. Even with daily morning
showers, it was great. My other rave about Hilo is that it is so NOT
touristy (for Hawaii). The tropical rainforest climate is far preferable
to the hot sunny climate of Kona. And the locals are so incredibly
friendly. What a great place to vacation. We are back home to 95 degrees
with 85% relative humidity, ugh. Anyway, thanks. I hope all was in
order when we left. Thanks again" -Flossie M., Charleston,
SC

"Just a quick note to
let you know how much we enjoyed your place in Hilo The weather was
fabulous and the location great. We were away from the beaten path
but yet right there close to everything. We saw whales every morning!!
Also the sea turtles a couple of time. Richardson's beach was very
nice and we were there every day from 10-1. Then to the volcano, waterfalls,
and we even took a helicopter ride. Worth It! Thanks again for the
opportunity. We will look you up for our 25th!!" -Marcia and
Kevin S., Sylvania, OH

"We had a wonderful time.
We enjoyed the house, the location, and we loved the rain. We spent
most of our time at the beach and just basically relaxed. We had a
great time and we will be back. Thank you!" - John, Cody,
Kelli, Robert I, Robert II, and Gunnar W., Chino Valley, AZ

"Well we're back home,
and having great difficulty adjusting to "big city" life, after our
wonderful trip to Hilo!! Needless to say, the 8Hawaii Beaches house,
exceeded our expectations. It's a beautiful house, with great views
and every amenity you could ask for. We were very fortunate with regard
to the weather, as it only rained at night and very early in the morning.
Our days, were all fairly sunny and perfect for beach time at Richardson's.
We took advantage of many of the other local sites, and visited the
Volcano, Rainbow Falls, Hawaii Tropical/Botanical Gardens, Zoo, Tsunami
Museum, and several other beach spots (Onekahhakaha, Leleiwi). We
also dined at good old Ken's Pancake House a couple of times, as well
as Seaside and Harringtons. We did find a place called Uncle Billy's
(Banyan Drive) and found it to be excellent service, great food and
they even had a small Hawaiian show (3 musicians, several dancers).
We enjoyed it so much, we went back a 2nd time and would suggest you
add Uncle Billy's to the list of restaurant recommendations. The local
Walmart was also a good place to shop, at decent prices and very conveniently
located near Safeway. One of the places in your literature for snorkel
gear rental (Aqua Perceptions) is no longer in business, but the Nautilus
Dive Shop near the Farmer's Market had gear, and good prices. You
had also mentioned a book we'd find in the house (Hawaii, the Big
Island Revealed), which despite our search, we didn't find.......perhaps
the previous renters forgot to return it. During our stay, we visited
the University of Hawaii @ Hilo, which is on the list of colleges
that our younger daughter is interested in. Of course, we have two
more years before she gets to the point of selecting a school, but
she fell in love with the small campus environment, and has worn her
UH baseball hat non-stop for the past week. We did notice, you also
have a house in Santa Cruz, and the University of Santa Cruz in on
her college list as well, so we just might be interested in renting
that one sometime in the next 12-18 months. Karri, our family has
traveled quite a bit (several cruises, 3 other trips to Hawaii, extensively
in Mexico, and many other vacation spots). However, this trip ranks
very high on our all-time favorite list!! As you had mentioned, the
people were friendly, the pace was pretty kick back, and the scenery
was absolutely gorgeous. Thank you very much for allowing us to rent
your home, and for the wonderful hospitality. p.s. Claire was fabulous.......greeted
us on our second day, checked on us to see if we needed anything and
was so friendly, it was as if we'd known her forever." -Bill,
Janice, Megan and Melissa D., Mission Viejo, CA
RESPONSE: Thank you! We replaced
the Big Island Hawaii book, and will add Uncle Billy's to our restaurant
list this month. Special thanks for letting us know about Nautilus
Dive Shop. Loved the thought of your daughter wearing her UH Hilo
cap. We welcome your family to back to Hawaii anytime. I look forward
to meeting you on your Santa Cruz visit! Warmest aloha, Karri

"I wanted to let you
know that we had a wonderful time in The Beaches. The house is very
lovely and comfortable. On top of all its amenities, we particularly
were impressed with the huge shower upstairs. After the beach we could
all wash off quickly. And I loved the Dynasty stove top. It is much
better than what I have at home and although I didn't do a lot of
cooking noticed how fast it cooks. I would like to have one of those.
Hilo is a charming town (even the staff at Safeway are kind). I soon
became used to driving again and the drivers in Hilo seem to know
that plenty of people driving are tourists because they are very patient.
We all enjoyed the beach and went swimming several times a day. I
was happy to see the colorful fish and we saw large sea turtles while
swimming and were lucky to see a mother and cub whale several times.
The girls had fun learning to surf with Claire's boys. Claire and
her family are very nice people. We often went to Ken's for breakfast
or for just a great chocolate milk shake. I think that Pesto's is
excellent. We had lunch there twice. You should receive your keys
in a few days. I hope that we will be able to visit again. Thank you."
-Charlotte H., Tokyo, Japan

"Aloha! Your home is
truly magnificent. We were blessed with sunny skies all week- could
even see the top of the volcano. We were impressed with how well stocked
the house was. The koi pond brought a lot of joy. We spent hours kneeling
by the pond, watching the brightly colored fish. The frogs were an
added treat. The soothing sounds of the beach added to the overall
comfort felt by everyone staying at the house. The beach in front
was wonderful for the kids. They saw turtles dolphins, and made quite
a few friends. My daughter cried on the day we departed. She is ready
to return already! We all look forward to coming back again soon.
Many thanks for all the extras and your excellent hospitality."
-Robert and Cynthia V., Chicago, IL

"What an amazing little
corner of the world. We really enjoyed your Beaches house! We must
have lucked out on the weather because we has mostly blue skies. We
loved exploring Volcanoes National Park, the tide pools, snorkeling
at Richardson Beach (we loved the turtles), the waterfalls, the Zoo!
Good food at Cafe Pesto, What's Shakin' Smoothies, and Sombat's Thai!
Thanks." -Debra, Aaron, Sarah, and Drew R., San Diego, CA

"By far, this was our
finest stay ever in Hawaii. Well worth the expense. The house and
gardens are incredible. We met a palm tree farmer in downtown Hilo,
and had the pleasure of touring his farm south of Hilo. He introduced
us to orchid grower and we're now considering starting a business
in San Diego working with both of them. All of the people we met were
wonderful. Hilo has a real charm, an inviting and comfortable feel.
Please thank Claire and Rex for us. We bought Claire an orchid as
a "thank you," and noticed before leaving she had planted
it in the yard of the house. They are real keepers. We will definitely
be back this year. We may bring the in-laws when we return. Thanks
again for providing such a splendid retreat!" -Kevin &
Virginia C., San Diego, CA

"Second visit (to the
Beaches house) for Steve and Nancy. It was just as lovely this time.
Mahalo!" - Steve and Nancy L, Portland, OR

"SUNNY HILO -- WOW! It
rained at night and in the very early morning only! Beautiful and
well stocked home. Thanks. Some must-do's: Volcanoes National Park,
Boiling Pots, Rainbow Falls, Cafe Pesto, cheap golf at Naniloa, and
if at all possible splurge for helicopter tour, AMAZING. -Donna
R., Mill Valley, CA

"We were sad to leave
Hilo. It was so beautiful. It only rained at night. Ocean Sushi on
Keawe is "ono" and affordable. Sambat's is the best Thai.
The locals are very friendly if you are. Remember we all have roots.
This house is very child friendly. Aloha from," -Jeremy, Kristina,
Shaylee T., and Jim, Rhonda, Emily, and Nathaniel T., Bakersfield,
CA

"Thanks, Karri. Great
house, great location. This was one of our most relaxing vacations
ever. Mahalo!" -Anita, David, and Jaime G., Chatsworth, CA

"Mahalo Nui Loa for sharing
your beautiful home with our family. It was perfect. We can't wait
to come back... All our aloha" -Kale, Edwina, Ikaika, Koa,
Lani, & Kalama F., Reno, NV

"This house was wonderful.
I loved the design of the house and placement of everything. We enjoyed
snorkeling in the clear water at Richardson beach. A turtle swam right
up to us. The Farmer's Markets were awesome and we also found lots
of things in the shops downtown. The people were very friendly. One
shop owner even let my dad take aikido classes with them, and them
told him about great places to surf. Everyone must try the fish from
the Suisan Fish Store and hike to see the Volcanoes. The weather is
just perfect, especially when compared to Charleston where it is so
hot. Mahalo! We loved this house and the gorgeous view." -Leila
M., Charleston, SC

"Thank you so much for
all of your help with making my mom's trip memorable. She had a fantastic
time! The house was better than I could have ever imagined. I will
always remember the extra time and special attention you have us.
I will look forward to staying in one of your homes in the near future.
You will be highly recommended to all of my friends and family. A
sincere THANK YOU." -Jennifer O., Phoenix, AZ
"We most definitely enjoyed
our stay at 8 Hawaii Beaches. What a beautiful house! And Great Location
Too. We only wish we could have stayed longer. Hope to be back soon.
Thanks again." -Debbie R., Montreal, Canada

"Where was all the rain
rumored to plague Hilo??? We never saw a drop of rain over our 2 week
stay. The house was absolutely spectacular, just as you described
it. Marvelously equipped, immaculately clean, and very comfortable.
Thank you for accommodating us for the extra nights. We were not ready
to return to Kona. We truly appreciate your introduction to Claire
and Rex. They are warm, kind, and helpful people. My husband spent
hours walking the gardens learning about the native plants from both
of them. We've returned home enlightened by the generosity of the
local people who shared so freely. We've been talking about retiring
in Hilo. We're seriously considering it, and would like to return
later this year to look at property. Please expect our call."
Jan S., Portland, OR
RESPONSE: Thank you,
Jan. We get about 30% less rain in this area of Hilo, but generally
Hilo is not as rainy as you might think. It gets more rain than Kona,
but it does not rain daily. When it does rain, it usually does so
in short spurts, but definitely not the cold rain you're accustomed
to in Oregon. Throughout the year, there are far more beautiful days
than rainy days!

"This house was everything you advertised
and more! We had such a wonderful stay at Hawaii Beach house. The
kitchen is better equipped, and definitely more organized, than
my kitchen at home. My husband's sunglasses lost the small screw,
and we were amazed that your tool kit had a small screwdriver and
extra screw that fit perfectly. This happened all week. Anything
we thought we needed was easily found inside the house. We loved
the beach in front. What a peaceful place. I surprised everyone
and went for a swim in the water, which I've never done in Hawaii
before. This trip has been our best stay in Hawaii. We toured all
the major Big Island attractions, but our best days were spent lounging
around the house, the yards, and the beach. You asked us to recommend
anything you might add to the house, but we honestly could not dream
of anything more. You've both done a fantastic job. We'd like to
come back with the kids (all adults, but still "kids")
during the holiday week in December. Thank you again for an absolutely
outstanding accommodation." -Liz and Lee W., Dallas, TX.
RESPONSE: Thank you,
Liz and Lee. We added the tool kit at the recommendation of another
guest. Glad it worked for you!

"We returned late tonight
after an amazing first trip to Hawaii. Thank you for allowing us to
stay at this most beautiful house, and for opening our eyes to all
that the spirit of aloha encompasses. We can't stop talking about
all the nice people we met in Hilo. My mother, father, and I agree
that the spirit in Hilo is so much stronger and more endearing than
in Kona. We also prefer the green, tropical feel of Hilo over the
dry barren desert in Kona. With the wild orchids, those giant red
flowers (that look like they're made of wax), countless varieties
of palms, and wild green vegetation, Hilo looks a lot more like the
Hawaii we dreamed about for so many years. We would like to return
as a family next year and stay in this same house the entire time.
The experience was everything we hoped it would be, and more. We really
enjoyed the beach, volcano, botanical gardens, waterfalls, and mac
nut factory. I loved the Hilo Hattie store in town, and also the farmers
market. My father and mother walked each morning at the beach, and
had the time of their lives. Thank you for encouraging us to try Hilo,
and to stay at this amazing house. With much love and aloha - from
my family to yours," -Jean M. and Family, Richmond, VA.

"What an amazing house!
We've been to Hawaii 15 times in the past 20 years. It was our first
trip to Hilo, and our best trip ever. For the first time, we really
felt connected to the local experience. The people were unbelievable
friendly. I walked the block each morning to many waives, smiles,
and warm greetings. What a wonderful Hawaii. Many mahalos." -Earl
and Emile T., Salt Lake City, UT.

"Thank you for sharing your beautiful
home in Hilo. We really enjoyed our stay." -Satin and Dave
B., Redmond, WA.

"We truly
enjoyed our stay here. This is a beautiful home with an incredible
location! This was a wonderful stay and we hope to be able to visit
again sometime!" -Jennifer and Craig H., Spokane, WA.

"We most definitely enjoyed
our stay at 8Hawaii Beaches. What a beautiful house (and great location)!
We only wish we could have stayed longer. Thanks again." -Debbie
R., Higley, AZ.

"We just returned from
Hawaii where we had a wonderful time. The property was every bit as
beautiful as the pictures and the people in Hilo were absolutely wonderful.
We had a restful vacation and want to thank you for allowing us to
stay at your property." -Sheila D., Cupertino, CA.

"We want to thank you
so much for letting us stay at the beautiful Hilo home. We enjoyed
out time on the island very much & have already told many of our
friends about it. Thanks again (actually Mahalo!)" -Karen
& Dean U., Los Angeles, CA.

"Just a note to let you
know we had a wonderful stay on the Big Island. The 8 Hawaii beaches
home was wonderfully furnished -- I loved the kitchen, and the walk-in
shower was fabulous. Even though there was quite a bit of rain last
week, it didn't stop us from doing anything we planned. A real treat
was snorkeling at Richardson Beach right across the street, and swimming
with the two resident turtles there! 8 Palms was a great contrast,
and we enjoyed the opportunity to spend a little time there. The crashing
surf was very impressive. Didn't have time to try the surf rods, but
we did find and use the barbecue. (Might be a nice addition to 8 Hawaii
Beaches at some time in the future)." -Barbara B., Seattle,
WA.
RESPONSE: Thanks Barbara
for the suggestion. We added the barbecue!

"I just wanted to write
to tell you what a wonderful stay my family and I had at the 8 Hawaii
Beaches house. It was incredibly spacious and perfect for a family
of 6! However, we only had 3 people in our party so the space was
more than ample. The house itself made us think we were on vacation
without even leaving! All 3 bedrooms have exquisite views. Waking
up in the morning was impossible to do without a smile on our faces.
The tide pond in the front is beautiful with the fish and tropical
foliage. The house had everything and more that we needed for our
stay. The kitchen was huge, gorgeous, and contained all modern amenities.
The black sand beach and prime snorkeling are just steps away in a
protected bay area with a lifeguard. It is a perfect family retreat
in which we plan on returning in the future." - Shirley H.,
Sacramento, CA.

"We loved your beautiful home -
would be happy to use it again. We had great weather and enjoyed
walking the "lane" behind Awe Street. The master bedroom
suite is so wonderful- loved the shower...and the closet too! Wayne
lived on the lanai up there. I even carried dinner up there one
night- thanks for the candle! We ate in two nights, ate at the Seafood
House the other two- freshest fish we ever had! We really appreciated
the fresh, clean, throw rugs in the bathroom and the fluffy big
towels. PS: Great kitchen- loved the cooking utensils and lovely
dishes. Thanks again!" -Margie and Wayne D., Roseville,
MN.
RESPONSE: Thank you, Margie
& Wayne. We added Seaside Restaurant to our "Favorite Restaurants"
guide for future guests.

"This was the best trip we've had
to Hawaii, and I know the 8Hawaii Beaches house was key to our experience.
We concluded long ago that East Hawaii had a lot more to offer than
the tourist areas in Kona. Our biggest problem was finding a house
on a beach where we could snorkel. In the past, we had to drive
20-30 minutes to a swimming beach. This house is unbelievable inside,
and the location is cannot be matched. We love Richardson's Beach,
and had been driving to it for years when visiting Hilo. When we
entered the house, we were surprised anyone would rent out such
a nice place. It's just beautiful. We took excellent care of it,
and hope everything was up to par at checkout. Please expect us
back next year." -Jerry S., San Francisco, CA.
SURFRIDER

"Just a note to let you know we enjoyed the Surfrider house and Hilo. It's really a cute beach bungalow. Absolutely loved the Richardson beach; what a great swimming beach and you feel wonderful after getting out of the water each morning. Hilo is really a wonderful, understated place, especially when the weather cooperates. From what I read and hear, I guess there are some months when the rain is tough, but we had sunshine every day and the rain never inconvenienced us. We lucked into seeing a Kamehameha Day festival and really enjoyed seeing a bit of a more authentic Hawaiian town, and of course it's a perfect jumping off place for daytrips to Volcanoes or the Hamakua coast..." -George B., Pittsburgh, PA

"Nice beach house with
all the amenities we needed. The boogie boards and snorkel items were
a great bonus. We also appreciated how clean and tidy the house was.
Great beach in front. Thank you!" -Davis M, Santa Barbara, CA

"Aloha, we had a wonderful
time. The house is very cozy and comfortable. We would love to come
back." -Phillips Family, Pasadena, CA

"We made the drive to Waipio
one day via Akaka Falls then spent another day at Volcanoes National
Park. The weather there was clear and beautiful. Hiked to the petroglyphs
and drove to the end of Chain of Craters Road but there was no visible
lava flow. Swam at the beach and relaxed enjoying the house." -
Rob, Cori, and Alexa R., Houston, TX

"We came for our honeymoon
and it was wonderful!" - Chad and Jenny C., Madison, WI

"Beautiful island, great
stay!" - Tanya, Angela, and Stephanie T., St. John's, Newfoundland,
Canada

"This house made our first
trip to Hawaii very special. Mahalo and Aloha!" - Ann S., Livermore,
CA

"I'm sending you belated
thanks for allowing us the privilege of staying in your "surf-rider"
home in Hilo. We had such a great time - the house was perfect for my
family and the location right across from Richardson Beach Park couldn't
be beat. We especially enjoyed spending time in a less-touristy part
of the islands and hanging out with the locals. We sincerely hope that
the house did not sustain any damage from the tropical storm that came
through a few days after our departure. Thanks again for sharing your
home with us - we will pass along good words to other families we know
who may be interested in vacationing in Hilo." - Patty G., San
Francisco, CA
RESPONSE:
No damage to any of the houses. The rain passed quickly. Thank
you, Patty!

"Thank you for sharing
your great house with us. Your attention for detail was appreciated.
It was so nice to rent a house with adequate amenities and all the kitchen
utensils! We usually stay in Kona, but love it here now too. We left
some beach chairs and an ice chest for future guests to enjoy."
- Don and JoAnn S., Mokelumne Hill, CA

"We had a great time! The
views and closeness to the beach are wonderful. Ken's (House of Pancakes)
and the Seaside Restaurant are good places to eat. The scuba diving
out of Big Island Divers is excellent. My wife and daughter loved the
shopping. Check out the beach and snorkeling at Mauna Kea and on the
way see Akaka Falls. They are all great. Thanks to Matt and Karri! PS:
Claire does a great job." -Steve W. and family, Evansville,
IN

"Your house was great!
My family was very comfortable. This is exactly what we hoped Hawaii
would be. The view- breathtaking! We'll stay longer next time. Claire
and her family were best of all. We really enjoyed talking with her
and we learned a lot. Ken's (House of Pancakes) is great! Loved the
zoo. Aloha and Mahalo." -Dawn and Tim G., Woodbridge, VA and
Lee R., Spokane, WA

"Karri and Matt: Thank
you for a great time! We met and enjoyed Claire and my kids met two
local boys who spent everyday showing us everything. We saw wonderful
things and places tourists never see. Thank you for a trip we will never
forget and for precious memories that will last forever." Donna
S. and family, Irvine, CA

"We loved the house and
the fact that the beach was just across. Ken's (House Of Pancakes) breakfast
menu and lunch at Harrington's, and dinner at Cafe Pesto. All were exceptional.
We highly recommend horseback riding at Waipio Ranch and a visit to
the farmer's market. Thanks so much for Claire and her children showing
the girls around. The house is beautiful and so is the view." -Jerry
and Gale W., Dallas, TX

"Thanks for a great vacation.
The house was great and perfectly located. The snorkeling at Richardson
beach was great. Ans seeing the lava flow from the volcano was awesome!
We all had a relaxing day at Ahalanui warm springs- 90 degree water!
Waterfalls, rainbows, lava caves, eels, clown fish, macadamia nuts,
wild coconuts, kids beaches, lava flows, and so much more- what wonderful
memories. Thanks again!" -Dean and Virginia C. and family, Dallas,
TX

"Matt and Karri, You made
us feel so welcome and your house is most comfortable. Randy, Bill and
Teresa and kids, as well as us thoroughly enjoyed our time spent with
you and with your extended family. We hope very much to return to your
lovely island and to see all of you again. Aloha." -Bill and
Kay S., Willits, CA

"We came to celebrate Grandpa
Popes birthday. It was a total surprise to him right up to the moment
we got to the Aloha airlines desk. He thought it was 2 days at Catalina
or a "mystery train" ride. It was 9 days in his favorite place
on the Big Island. Ages 22 months to 65 all has a great time. Explored,
swam, snorkeled, watched whales, saw sea turtles, fished a bit and ate
too much! Thanks for use of your GREAT house." -Popes family,
San Luis Obispo, CA, Corona, CA, and Huntington Beach, CA

"We came a long way to
visit- all the way from Beijing, China. We had a lovely time in this
lovely house, and we're going to try hard to get back. Thank you."
-Ted P., Beijing, China

"We enjoyed our stay very
much. It proved a great accommodation to our family (with triplets).
Your attention to details is very much appreciated. We only wish we
could have stayed longer- it's like a home away from home. Thanks for
making our vacation a pleasant one. We hope to come back soon! Sincerely,"
-Michael and Angela L.& family, Redondo Beach, CA

"We had a great time here
in Hilo. The Volcano, the waterfalls, snorkeling with the sea turtles,
and the gorgeous scenery were all great. The house is lovely and had
everything we needed. The board games are fun to keep us entertained
in the evenings." -Julie and Justin N., Plano, TX

"Hilo No Ka 'Oe! Mahalo
Nui for the perfect gathering place to spend time with the Hilo-Keaukaha
gang. The memories live on. Aloha." -Mari and Chip H., Sunset

"Thanks! This was our best
trip to Hawaii. This particular area of Hilo is amazing. It gets WAY
less rain and more sunny days and beautiful blue skies! We loved our
Surfrider stay. The house was perfect for our family. We truly enjoyed
Richardson beach and the lovely local folks. Friendly people, great
accommodations, and perfect weather. Who could ask for more? Expect
a call from us. We're definitely coming back. Aloha." -Ken and
Al, New York.

"We loved our stay! Perfect
house, perfect company, perfect weather! So much to do. This house was
great! Mahalo." -Randy and Cathy T., Hidden Springs, ID

"Great house. Great weather.
Hundreds of whales and lots of dolphins. Had a great time. Local residents
exceptionally friendly. Mahalo!" -Roy and Sheri V., Vancouver WA

"What a wonderful house
and setting. We saw whales and swam with the turtles! Our entire vacation
was one we'll treasure. We'll be back! Mahalo!" -David and Taylor
R., Paradise Valley, AZ

"Thank you for letting
us use your wonderful home. We hate to leave!! Hilo is the best! We
drove all over finding more and more breathtaking sights. The Big Island
is truly amazing. Every ecosystem imaginable. Get a big kick from the
antics of the mongeese (mongooses?). Loved the turtles at Punaluu (that
was the best, swimming with them and enjoying them up close). All the
different waterfalls are beautiful as are the eco-gardens. Didn't see
lava flowing but wandered all around the crater and down to the ocean-
especially enjoyed walking on the lava beds. Thank you - Mahalo. We'll
be back!!" -Suzie and Heather T., and Mike S., Santa Rosa, CA

"Ah... Hilo. Funky, quirky
remnant of old-time Hawaii. Not the first visit, but the first time
snorkeling with the sea turtles at Richardson beach... what a gem! With
the peace and quiet of this beautiful place- even the brief, torrential
downpours could not dampen our spirits. A visit to the Tsunami Museum
definitely worthwhile, as is the Farmer's Market. Perhaps the best part
was having the comfort and convenience of this wonderful house after
a day of activity. For that and more, we're grateful." -Peter
R. and family, Grand Junction, CO

"Thanks a lot for a great
house. The view is beautiful, and the beach is a spectacular snorkeling
place. We saw 27 turtles. The Volcano was awesome. Red hot lava pouring
into the ocean. And be sure to stop off at the waterfalls. We really
loved this side of the island. The weather was perfect and we took in
the waterfalls, horseback riding, and the zoo. People were friendly
and the kids loved all the DVD's and videos you had available. What
a wonderful place. Thanks." -Gene and Bev. F., Woodland, CA

"Perfect location for a
Hawaiian vacation. We all enjoyed the beautiful fish, coral, turtles
and warm ocean snorkeling from Richardson beach. Enjoyed the Volcano
National park, waterfalls, and Safari helicopter ride to view the lava
and waterfalls- great adventure. Lava was not going into the ocean.
Saw red lava in the Pu'u O'o crater- waterfalls were beautiful as well
as walking through the tropical rainforest, A lovely vacation homes
with an outstanding view. Enjoyed the evening rains and occasional downpours."
-Yvetta W. and family, Rancho Palos Verdes, CA

"Surfriders is the perfect
Hawaiian house. What a great view! This is our first visit to the Big
Island and we truly enjoyed everything- The Botanical gardens, Volcano
National Park, the market and also the festival in Hilo. Thank you!"
-Jim and Pat R., Springville, NY, and Bill R., San Francisco, CA

"Had a fantastic time-
for me especially. It was my 50th high school reunion and this house
is right next door to the house I grew up in (the blue one). The other
three tagged along and really enjoyed themselves. Luau, several trips
to the Volcano, all over Hilo- They go home today and I still have 3
more weeks. Wahoo! Be back in 5 years for the next reunion."
Aida G., Watson, OK

"Thanks! Wonderful location.
We did as much cleaning as we could. Great night storms (in late October)
and clear mornings. We enjoyed every minute." Zena C., San Jose,
CA

"Had a great time! Visiting
Hilo was a wonderful travel experience. Nice house!" -Maggie
and Mikey D., La Selva Beach, CA

"This was our first trip
to the Big Island. It was awesome. This quaint house with the spectacular
view made out visit even better. We love Hilo and the Surfrider house.
Aloha." -James and Judy P., Prescott, AZ

"We loved everything about
this side of the island. Oceanfront view, easy access to several attractions-
Volcanoes, Hawaiian gardens, rainforest, falls, etc. We really appreciated
and enjoyed the laid-back feel of this part of the island. Great house...
We felt right at home! MUST DO: Take the helicopter ride over
the Volcano. It was the highlight of our trip." -Duane and Lynn
Marie B., Hemet, CA

"Wonderful cozy house,
beautiful weather and way too much to do! We loved everything about
our stay: the Volcano, the beaches, snorkeling, hiking, exploring, the
farmer's market. Hilo is wonderful laid-back town. This was our best
family vacation yet. Thanks for helping make it perfect. Mahalo!"
-Allie, Andy, Jared & Eric D., Santa Cruz, CA

"We had a wonderful time!
Everything here is just a perfect paradise. The house and grounds were
amazing, and we could not ask for anything more. Shortly after we arrived,
Claire stopped by with the most beautiful topical flower arrangement.
She was very helpful in giving directions to the best place to view
the lava at night, and invited us over to her grandmother's house for
a barbecue birthday dinner. We gladly accepted, and what a treat it
was to listen to "tutu" talk about old Hawaii. We tried poi
for the first time, and ate a meal prepared with the spirit of aloha.
This was the absolute highlight of our trip. We also met several nice
neighbors and beachgoers. You were right about the friendly people in
Hilo. When we found the battery on our rental car was drained (after
a night of leaving the interior lights on), my husband lifted the hood
of the SUV, and it took only 10 seconds for two cars to stop and offer
help. We were on the road again in no time. We all agreed, this would
never happen where we come from in San Francisco and Los Angeles. The
people in this area of Hawaii are so special. We had not intended to
return to the Big Island soon, but after this trip we agreed to make
the Surfrider house our destination for next summer. We plan to return
with the kids. Thank you so much for providing this very special place."
-John & Liz M. (Marin, CA), and Frank & Kathy W., Los Angeles,
CA

"Great house in
super location! This house worked perfectly for us this year.
Can't wait to go again. If you ever stop renting, I told Diane
we're going to have to buy something in Hawaii. We were sad
to leave. Please give us a call to chat about our next visit.
We plan to return with the grandkids this summer. Be in touch
soon. Many mahalos!" -Eric and Ann C., Phoenix, AZ

"I
loved the house and loved Hilo. We were sad to have to leave
Hilo and head back to Kona for a week. We flew into Kona
and drove the scenic route to Hilo when we arrived. Jerry and
I were unimpressed with Kona's barren landscape, lack of tropical
plants and vegetation, and the haze in the horizon. We noticed
the landscape changing, becoming more green and tropical, as
we approached Hilo. This is what we dreamed Hawaii would be
like. We Since this was our first trip to the Big Island, we
divided our stay and did not realize we would fall in love with
the Hilo side of the island. We were expecting a lot of rain,
but it rained only twice during our stay and both times were
at night. At least we know where to come back to! More later
when we get home. Until then a thousand thanks" -Meg
and Jerry H., Richmond, VA

"I made it home,
and wanted to thank you for making my trip so special. I was
hesitant about staying alone, but I felt 100% comfortable after
arriving at the Surfrider house. This was definitely the right
house for me. Thank you for recommending it. The house felt
so warm, inviting, and comfortable. I was able to relax from
the moment I walked through the door. Claire dropped by and
was so sweet and caring. Her children were wonderful. After
she left, I felt like I had an instant friend in the neighborhood.
I also appreciate your calling to check in on me. You and your
crew do a wonderful job at making people feel welcome. I decided
that even if I return with friends next trip, I'm staying at
this house again. Thank you so much." -Nancy S., New
York, NY

"Thanks for providing such a
comfortable, immaculate, well-equipped house. We loved everything!"
-Pam W., Palo Alto, CA

"Thank you both for
the nice rental house/home. Even the lovely flowers were wonderful.
We simply has a marvelous time. I liked being in town and close to
everything. 24 hour Walmart was a convenience we've never had on previous
Hawaii trips. Your beach location is great. We saw some remarkable
birds at Lava Tree State Park - Highly recommend! Thanks again for
providing such a nice place for us to stay." -Betty and Rob
L., Anchorage, AK.

"The house was immaculate
when we arrived. We did our best to leave it the same. Hope you find
it to be okay. We left a few boogie boards and a fishing guide book
inside the house for future guests. The kids had a lot of fun at the
beach. I was able to stay with the baby and watch the boys on their
boogie boards from inside the house. A fine location and great food
at Seaside Restaurant down the street. The neighbors were very nice,
and we enjoyed walking and talking with them." - Sue and Greg
L., Seattle, WA.

"We had a great stay.
The house was very nice and new addition looks great. The only bad
part about our trip was that we did not spend enough time in Hilo.
I guess we will have to go back! I will definitely keep you in mind
for vacation rentals in the future. Thank you for all your help."
-Brandon D., Concord, CA.

"We had a great time
in Hawaii, and loved the Surfriders house. It was just darling.
I hope we will be able to stay there again someday." -Helen
and Eric H., Washington D.C..
"Thanks for a great stay.
This was our first experience renting a house instead of a hotel. We
thoroughly enjoyed the Surfriders house. It was nice to have to have
such a well equipped kitchen. The Richardson Beach was fantastic. We
went to the beach every day and saw the same turtles (we think) each
morning. The snorkeling equipment was a wonderful extra. I really liked
the feel of Hilo. What a pleasant change from Honolulu. The weather
was beautiful, the local people were very nice, and I liked the green
foliage and the sounds of waves rolling in at night. We left the windows
open and the sounds were heavenly. The restaurant and activities guides
you provided were very helpful. I can't think of anything you might
add to make for a better experience. My grandson loved the video library!
We hope to return next year. " -Carol J., San Diego, CA.
"What a great place.
We love the Surf house, area, and your awesome cleaning crew! My mother
was stunned by how fast her security check was refunded. She called
me to say the postmark was the actual day of our departure! I am glad
"the crew" was happy with us. We were certainly pleased with
all the special things you provided. The house was very clean and comfortable.
Thanks so much for everything. You really have your program together
and I will recommend your properties to friends. If you have houses
on other islands, we're interested in visiting Kauai next year."
-Margo M., Huntington Beach, CA.
"When I booked the Surfrider,
I fully expected it to be a condo at the beach. I was shocked (in a
good way) when I arrived and realized it was a house. You should add
pictures of the exterior of the place. Nice to have the privacy of a
home at the beach. This was our first experience in a vacation house
(not a condo), and we now prefer homes. My son and daughter had a great
time learning to snorkel. I think the beach equipment and video games
were a real bonus. Thanks for asking Arlene to bring over the fishing
poles. We never did come back from the beach long enough to use them,
but it was nice of you both. We plan to try your bigger house with my
in-laws next trip." -Mike and Sue M., Mountain View, CA.
MANGOS
|
"SO
WHAT DID WE LEARN?"
1. Don't try and make the trip (from Pennsylvania) in 1
day.
2. Stay more than 1 week.
3. Staying somewhere other than the MANGOS house would
be a mistake!
4. Must get a king sized bed at our house. (Preferably
with beautiful breezes and ocean sounds.)
5. Hawaii is as beautiful as everyone says.
6. Hawaiian people are the best.
7. Have a son or daughter living there as guides.
8. If you don't like the weather...wait 5 minutes.
9. Go Rural. Forget metro tourist traps.
10. Return to paradise.
"Thank
you sooooo much for the part you played in our trip. We put over
600 miles on the rentals, so we know what to prioritize the next
time... South Point, Tide Pools, Cliff Fishing are GREAT (Mac
Kenzie Park). Richardson Beach, Farmer's Market in Pahoa A MUST
(wonderful smoked meats). I have a contact for a local fisherman
to experience shore fishing. No frills and not for novices, but
a really great and knowledgeable man. Mahalo" -Carl and
Donna C., Phoenixville, PA
NOTE: We will add Carl's
fishing recommendation to book for Guests inside the house, and
also include in the arrival package for guests staying at our
other homes. A BIG Mahalo to Carl!
|
| "I
just want to let you know that our family really enjoyed our stay
at the 8 Mangos house. The house is very comfortable and relaxing.
It is also convenient to the Volcano Park and to the beaches."
-Liming L., Chicago, IL |
| "We
absolutely loved Mangos House---no wonder so many of your visitors
return. We sure plan to! Although we're thinking of having a family
reunion sometime this next year, so Beaches and Surfrider might
be a better combination so the kids could enjoy the beach. But Bob
and I loved the quiet and the lava cliffs of Mangos. Perfection!
Also we were very impressed by the friendly efficiency of your hosting
and amazed by the speed with which we received the deposit refund---it
almost beat us home! Thanks again for everything, we look forward
to returning to Mangos. Until the next time---soon, I hope!---.
We will definitely recommend your Hawaii homes to one and all. Mahalo
and aloha," -Leesa J., Tucson, Arizona |
| "The
directions were great & it looked exactly like the picture! The
house is great with a wonderful view. Loved the tropical setting.
I love getting a fresh plumeria for my hair everyday! We liked Cronies
for the big delicious hamburgers. The warm water pool area was a
big bathtub delight. The coast looked so far away, then all of a
sudden you are at the park. We had an enjoyable time there and our
grandson learned to swim on his own there. That made it special."
-Gary and Louise S., Carpinteria, California |
| "What
a beautiful location and what a lovely, lovely accommodation! The
house is more than we even expected. We've settled right in and
feel very much at home - with all of the conveniences we might need.
All very comfortable with care given and much though to the varied
interests and needs of the guest. The view is stupendous. The sounds
of the waves crashing against the lava rock and reverberating is
a "forever memory". The smell of the flowers and plants - the best
perfume this side of heaven. Bird calls that are new and different
from home. Even a neighborhood rooster to wakes us in the morning!"
-Gary, Betsy, Gene & Emily, New York |
|
"Leaving
tomorrow with so many happy memories, we feel so grateful for
the beautiful week at the Mangoes house on the Big Island! The
weather has been absolutely gorgeous every day. We saw whales
almost daily. The quality of the air here is so special. If anything
bears repetition, it's this wonderful spot. Worth every penny
and more!" -Lorraine J., Calgary Alberta, Canada
"I echo
the sentiments of my sister! Beautiful house, glorious setting,
fantastic weather - a little corner of Paradise. Many thanks!
God Bless" -Raymond C, Montreal, Quebec, Canada
|
| "We
had a good time. Thanks a lot. We LOVE Mango. Mahalo from Halau
Hula Mehana O Kala" - Tomoko, Risa, Aya, and Reiko, Tokyo,
Japan |
| "It
is a very nice place - great views, sounds, comforts. Really enjoyed
our stay here... Felt right at home, enjoyed the closed in porch.
You are doing a very nice job of keeping it clean and comfortable-
thanks" -Colleen and Joe P., Tahoe City, CA |
| "Thanks
for the wonderful stay! Your home was clean and comfortable. We
appreciated the list of places to go and directions. We recommend
the heated pond and the Volcano. We would like to also suggest the
Hilo Bay Cafe as a eating experience. We ate there twice! It's hard
to go home! Thanks again" -Glenn & Rosemary and Gene & Shirley,
Soap Lake, WA |
| "Just
wanted to let you know we had a great time at your cottages. Very
comfortable and stocked well enough to make it very easy to cook.
I wouldn't hesitate in recommending the place to anyone. I'll be
in touch if we're ever in one of your areas." -Andrew B.,
Vancouver, Canada |
| "I
can't tell you what a wonderful week this has been. We've seen the
whales countless times, breaching and playing -- and that's on top
of all the other amenities this house has to offer. We have been
so comfortable and comforted by our rest here -- I can well understand
now why the Mango house has so much repeat business. It has been
a wonderful reunion, a needed break for my brother and great way
for my sister and her husband to honor their 30th anniversary, not
to mention Kelly's and my 7 years together. Warmest aloha and mahalo."
-Claire & Kelly R., Sioux Falls, SD |
| "Aloha
Karri, Just a quick note to thank you for the wonderful stay at
Mangos. Hawaii is such a balm and your oceanfront house was captivating.
You could look at the ocean for hours. Quite frankly we didn't do
enough of this ...the weather was great and we loved your flowers
(they lasted all week) and it was nice meeting Samantha. We had
forgotten, but it was she who recommended you when we were originally
planning this trip and her Sea Watch was booked. It was nice to
make the connection. And regarding your website... What you see
is what you get. Your pictures are a pretty accurate representation
of Mangos. Also we appreciated your clean house. We will recommend
you and keep your other properties in mind as well. We had a great
time. Mahalo," -Steve and Sue L., Oakland, CA |
| "What
an incredibly wonderful, peaceful home for old friends to reunite.
This house is so well stocked and comfortable. We were entertained
by whales, turtles, and dolphins. The Volcano is a must and the
restaurant recommendations were excellent- especially Cafe Pesto
in Hilo. Thank you. Aloha!" -Judy and Tom C., Palm Springs,
CA |
| "This
house was a beautiful and tranquil place to come home to each day.
The house and setting far exceeded all of our expectations. I was
particularly impressed with the cleanliness and organization inside
the house. We all agreed that choosing this property was the right
move for our family. Thank you for your generous hospitality. Everything
was just right. Special thanks to Samantha for bringing the beautiful
flower arrangement for us. PS: We enjoyed coffee with sun rising
over the ocean each morning. " -Debbie and Dave H., Denver,
CO |
| "What
a wonderful time we had staying at 8 Mangos. We came to the Big
Island for a wedding and couldn't have found a better location.
What a treat to wake up each morning to the sound of the waves breaking
on the shoreline and to sit on the lanai with our coffee looking
out at the ocean. It has been so relaxing and enjoyable. We just
hate to leave. Thank you." -Pam and Haschi L., Murrieta,
CA |
| "This
was the best vacation we've ever had. We loved the quiet and relative
isolation, and spent lots of time just chilling out on the deck
and lanai. Saw whales almost every day. Sea turtles (huge) visited
one evening. Walking along the cliffs was great exercise. We enjoyed
our drive north along the coast to Parker Ranch- beautiful green
rolling hills. The house had everything we needed (and more), and
was quite comfortable. Samantha and Richard were both friendly and
helpful- everyone we met was! We'll be back. Mahalo!" -David
and Bonnie M., Hobart, IN |
| "This
house is the best equipped for furnishings and kitchen. Also, exceptionally
clean and well organized. Thank you, thank you, thank you!"
-Ann and Rob H., Madison, WI |
| "This
is our third visit to 8 Mangos and the Big Island. Coming here feels
like coming to our "house" in paradise. Each year we find
ourselves spending less time exploring the Island and more time
hanging out here in our own private paradise. Thanks for making
our now "annual" trip to the Big Island so wonderful.
Matt and Karri- you are the best host and hostess ever. Each year
you make the house even better :). Mahalo!! -Norine M. and Harry
B., Hillsboro, OR |
| "What
can we say? We had an incredible time exploring the Hilo side of
the island during our stay. Our favorite sites were Akaka Falls,
the Botanical Gardens, and the Volcano National Park. The beauty
was endless in these areas. This was a great and relaxing start
to our honeymoon. We will be spending another week exploring Kona.
Everything here was great and we are now thinking of a family vacation.
A big thank you to Matt and Karri for the wonderful accommodations
during our stay here." -Sam and Shannon B., Minneapolis,
MN |
| "Mangos
is everything you've promised! We are amazed at how well stocked
the essentials are and how many luxuries are available too! Whether
sitting on the deck watching the sun come up or seeing the first
stars appear at night- the days are very good ("ono!")
here. We'll be back. Mahalo & aloha!" -Jan & Don
W., Orlando, FL |
| "We
spent a whole week here. The view was spectacular!! We saw many
sea turtles. The guys enjoyed fishing and caught many fish. Loved
the quiet surroundings. It was like our own little piece of paradise.
We visited several local beaches. We went snorkeling at Richardson's
(beach). We also visited the Volcano National Park. Went on several
hikes there, We went back in the evening to walk up to the lava
flow. Quite a hike, but so worth it. All in all, this was a great
first half of our vacation. Thank you for providing such warm accommodations.
We enjoyed every minute of it. Mahalo." -James, Pat, Derek,
Neil, John, Darlene, Dustin, Jeff and Christina, Fountain Valley,
CA |
| "Thank
you for the use of this beautiful home. We enjoyed everything about
it. We really do like the Hilo side of the island. It's so green
and breathtaking. We will start saving now for a trip back later.
The location of the house was great. It was our own little paradise.
Thank you. Much Mahalo". -Marsha and Peter J., Boise, ID |
| "What
a lovely, relaxing house. We thoroughly enjoyed our time here. We
especially enjoyed the farmer's market, snorkeling at Richardson
Beach and seeing the lava flow at the Volcano- What an awesome experience!
We meant to drive and snorkel on the other side of the island, but
we were so happy just relaxing here, it was impossible to face that
drive. Mahalo" -Bob, Tracy, and Holly G., Seattle, WA |
| "Comfortable,
cozy, charming, cute, convenient, clean. Loved the Mangos house!
We had an awesome time." -John and Nancy S., Kenai, AK |
| "Thank
you Karri and Matt for providing such a beautiful spot. Highlights
of our 5 day stay: 1) cooking in a well appointed kitchen, 2) sipping
Kona coffee on the lanai, 3) buying produce at the Hilo farmer's
market- open all days but best on Wednesdays and Saturdays, 4) hiking
to Shipman's beach from the bottom of nearby Kaloli Street, 5) swimming
in the warm pond- MMMM (Ahalanui), 6) reading and loving "Hawaii
The Big Island Revealed" so much that I bought my own copy
at Borders in Hilo, 7) snorkeling in Champagne Pond- We saw 8 turtles,
8) driving up to Volcano, down the Chain of Craters Road to experience
lava moving across the highway, truly breathtaking and warm! 9)
The games and movies kept us happy during the evenings." -Gregg
F. and Sherrie S., Manchester-By-The-Sea, MA |
| "Thanks
for a wonderful place to stay. Lots of rain after dark and overnight,
but always cleared up here at the coast so we could see lots of
God's creation. The wet weather reminded me of last summer and fall
at home and 75 degrees sure beats the -4 degrees back at home this
morning. Still one day left in paradise before the long flight home
with things yet to see. 8 Mangos is a great place to stay and thanks
to Matt and Karri for their care and hospitality. Hope to get back
to Tahoe again and we'll be trying your place there. Mahalo!"
-Marilyn and Tom C., Lexington, OH |
| "Matt
and Karri, we enjoyed your house. Thank you for all the travel information,
restaurant tips, etc. I loved the little but very nice Malama Market.
The kids loved the warm pool (Konner finally learned to snorkel!),
the resident turtles seems to know the kids were dying to spot something
swimming in the ocean and made several appearances for them. Mahalo
for the great accommodations!" -Earnie and Cindie R., Cayucos,
CA |
| "Hilo
is magical. Twenty years ago my husband and I came to the Big Island
with our backpacks and very little money. All the beautiful vegetation
and seductive ocean made such an impression on us that we continually
talked about our adventures after we returned home. But interestingly,
it was Hilo that really left a mark. I think it was the rain. The
serenity of the rain, the lovely calm, quiet atmosphere it created,
and the lovely character of the town that soothed both our bodies
and souls. Now, we bring our two daughters who are enjoying all
the Hawaiian magic, plus a few specific extras! They loved the squirrel
monkeys at the zoo, which is such a beautiful place, and they fell
in love wit several of the dogs and kittens at the Humane Society.
We just had to visit there to see if the animals were being treated
well, and they were. I was impressed. It's a clean, well organized
animal shelter. Your house is amazing. We've been enjoying all the
comforts of the interior, and the incredible lava deck and ocean
out back. (A backyard to dream of!). If you ever want to sell it,
let us know! Mahalo!" -Robin and Stanley D., CA |
| "We
had a super week here! We had lots of fun checking out the many
waterfalls. Trekking upo the lava flows @ Volcano Natl. Park was
amazing. We were just feet away from oozing lava! The black sand
beach at Punaluu was very relaxing and full of turtles. Best of
all was coming "home" each day to the beautiful lava cliffs
and soothing surf. Mahalo!!" -Marianne and Jeff W. and family,
Philadelphia, PA |
| "What
an awesome experience. I adore your house! It was our little South
Pacific paradise! The kids enjoyed exploring and we all enjoyed
the beautiful view and constant breezes. You had everything organized
and efficient. Your tips were helpful and we loved your book Hawaii-
The Big Island Revealed. Words cannot describe the beauty and awe!
Mahalo. Take care and I hope to be back one day." -Mary
K., Phoenix, AZ |
| "We
spent 3 days here. This is a very nice place. Enjoyed watching the
sunrise and being right on the ocean. We went to Volcanoes National
Park and hiked to the lava flows at night. It was incredible. We
also drove north on Highway 19 and saw some cool falls and views.
Thanks for the place to stay. It was enjoyable. Mahalo." -Dave,
Lynn, Bryan, and Craig H., Grand Haven, MI |
| "Two
delightful weeks; rain just one afternoon. Turtles and whales entertained
us. Memorable drives to the Volcano, South Point and the Red Road-
amongst others. The house was very comfortable. We bought fresh
fruits and vegetables at the Keaau market- the papayas were great."
-George and Jane A., Port Townsend, WA |
|
"We loved
your spot at Keaau and thank you for making it available to us.
It was a perfect place for us to come and go, and to relax. And
having the Orchid cottage for my son and grandson was perfect.
We loved the turtle watching, surf watching, tide pools, snorkeling
at Richardson's beach, Hilo and the farmer's market there (and
the daily one in Keaau - papayas 7 for $1). The Mango and
Orchid houses were very comfortable, convenient, and truly perfect
for our family. The whole trip was a once-in-a-lifetime dream
come true! Many thanks again," -Susan A., Kirkland, WA
|
|
"Really
appreciated the peacefulness experienced at the Mango house. My
husband and I fell asleep on the lanai shortly after arriving.
We didn't even realize we were tired until we awoke a few hours
later! We both felt amazingly refreshed, and slept very well during
our entire stay at the Mango house. There is a tranquility and
calm at this house...gentle sounds of waves crashing along the
coastline, whispering palm fronds dancing in the wind, and delightful
hum of birds chattering at dawn. The house feels very island-style
with vaulted ceilings and warm cedar wood- but with all the modern
conveniences that make this home a pleasurable living experience.
Thank you for a memorable stay." -Laurie and Tom K., Oakland,
CA
|
|
"What
a wonderful home! It was absolutely perfect for our family. Everything
was just as your described, and I was particularly impressed with
how clean and the new the house felt inside. The wrapped flowers
on the dining room table were a nice touch. We thoroughly enjoyed
our time at the Mango house, in downtown Hilo, and at the volcano
park. Our only regret is not planning more time on your side of
the island. We were hesitant to stay a week in Hilo because of
all the rain described in the guidebooks. We had clear blue skies
everyday, warm (but not too hot) air, and spectacular oceanviews.
So much for the experts! We would like to return in February to
see the whales. We read about them from former guests in the book.
We did see dolphins and sea turtles, but I think we were too late
for whales. When is the season? There were a lot entries from
December to March describing whale sightings. The kids enjoyed
the fishing equipment. Thank you for a wonderful stay. Also, thanks
for the brochure on your other vacation rentals. We're thinking
of trying your California beach house next year." -Ellen
and John A., Dallas, TX
RESPONSE:
Whale season has traditionally been from mid-December to mid-April,
but there are always earlier and later arrivals. Looking forward
to seeing you again!

"Thank
you so much for the gift certificates. We enjoyed both restaurants
very much, had lunch at Cafe Pesto and then had a final dinner
on Friday night at Harrington's. They were both great. We were
going to surprise you and fix dinner for you in Hawaii. Now you
must come to Oregon this year, so that we can entertain you and
Harry can fix you one of his gourmet meals. Believe me, he is
a GREAT cook. Checked out the [other] houses, we actually met
Clair when we were at the Lilikoi house. She was really nice and
her daughter, who was with her that day, was adorable. This was
our favorite of the ones we looked at. But, not surprising, 8
Mangos is still our house of choice. It is hard to compete with
seclusion and total privacy that you have when you are there.
The whales were very active outside of the house. We had a much
needed, very mellow week, spending almost all of our time on the
Hilo side, getting to know this side of the Island even more.
Each evening we would read Hawaii, the Big Island Revealed, and
plan the next day's excursion. After breakfast, we would pack
up lunch and head off for a new adventure. Had lunch in some beautiful
spots. The last two days, we were totally lazy, only leaving the
house to go to dinner Friday night." -Norine and Harry
M., Portland, OR

"Thanks
for providing such an immaculate, well-equipped house. You asked
us to let you know if there was anything you might add to the
house. We looked through all the drawers, cabinets, and closets,
and could not think of anything we needed. Just when my husband
thought he had discovered something, we found the garlic press
in the drawer! I tried my luck using the breadmaker and it was
great fun. We bought a bread book at Border's in Hilo, and left
it in the house for others to use. Everything was 100%. The weather
was wonderful...blue skies everyday. I was particularly happy
to escape the intense heat and humidity we experienced last fall
on the Kona side of the island. We do plan to return next year.
We loved the Mango house, but would like to try the Hilo beach
front home next. The cleaning woman showed it to us, and it is
unbelievable. Be in touch soon. BIG THANKS." -Elaine and
Peter L., Chicago, IL

"We really
enjoyed 8 Mangos again this year. This is our second time back
to the Mango house, and I think we'll always return. I cannot
tell you how relaxed I feel while inside the house. There is something
really special about the position of the house on the planet!
For some reason, we both get the BEST sleep when staying at the
house. The new California King mattress is a great addition. We
both awoke each morning feeling rested and alert. We had the exact
same experience last year. The sounds of the waves crashing along
the shoreline is a magical sensation in the morning. Sunrise from
the master suite is wonderful way to get out of bed in the mornings.
This year, we saw an abundance of mother and baby whales. Some
of the babies were so small, we could barely see their tales.
They captivated our attention on more than morning! After returning
from the Farmer's Market on Saturday, Jon saw a huge whale jump
clear out of the water! We stayed 12 nights this year, an improvement
upon on 7 nights last year, but not quite the month I was hoping
for! I'll book earlier next year. I'll send you pictures soon.
Fondly," -Barbara and Jon A., Kansas City, MO

"We really
appreciate all the nice things you filled the house with. We've
never stayed at such a nice vacation home. This house does not
even compare to the condo we rented in Kauai.. Wish we could have
stayed at the Mango house AFTER we stayed in Kauai. We both felt
disappointed to arrive in Kauai after staying at your house. The
Mango house was so well equipped, so clean, and so comfortable.
It was just perfect for 2. I loved lounging on the tile porch,
listening to the ocean, and soaking up the sun. Gene was content
to fish in the front yard and read. We had a list of 2 dozen activities
and sights we planned to do and see, but at the end of the week,
we realized we had only left twice (once to the volcano park,
and one day divided between the Hilo farmer's market and shopping
mall!). Both of us felt extremely rejuvenated, and only regret
not staying 2 weeks. We will definitely be back. Mahalo for all
the hospitality." Karen and Gene H., Phoenix, AZ

"Another
great Hawaii stay! We loved the Mango house. Last year we stayed
the Surfrider house in the Hilo Bay. I'm glad we tried the Mangos
house this trip. It was every bit as private and relaxing as you
described. The house is much more spacious than it appears on
the web site. Even though there were only 2 of us, we enjoyed
all the additional living space. We saw many dolphins and sea
turtles. While walking around the neighborhood, we met a nice
woman who told us the whales would be coming in December, but
we were too early. We're looking forward to coming back in the
spring." -James and Carole N., Ann Arbor, MI

"What
can we say except, we'll be back next year!"

"We had
a good time at 8Mangos. The house was very comfortable, clean,
and everything was so well organized. Thank you." -Gail

"This
is a beautiful place and a very nice location. The neighbors are
friendly. We enjoyed our stay here. Thank you!" -Mark

"We truly
enjoyed our stay at the Mango house. When I first booked, I thought
the house would be too big for the 3 of us. After we arrived,
it felt like "home." The bedrooms were large enough
for us all to have our own space to read, write, and spend time
alone. We used the barbecue a lot and ate dinner on the patio
most nights. The granite kitchen is just beautiful. The covered
porch was our favorite place to play Scrabble in the evenings.
The sounds of the crashing waves and the ocean breezes were fantastic.
We have stayed in a lot of Hawaii condos over the years, but the
Mango house is an all time favorite. It was much more relaxing
not to have to fight for a parking space in the lot, wait for
an elevator, or listen to doors slamming down a central hallway.
We never realized how different the experience could be until
staying in a private home. We all agreed that our next Hawaii
trip will be back to the Big Island...hopefully at one of your
homes. We cleaned before leaving. Let me know if anything was
not as you expected. Mahalo and aloha." -Amy, Marge and
Bart A., Seattle, WA

|
"Thank
you for a wonderful vacation. The view is awesome. We enjoyed
sitting out on the lava rocks watching the waves crashing and
feeling the sea breeze. We appreciate your help and understanding
during our delay due to the tragic events. Hope we can get back
in the near future. Thank you again for your kind hospitality."
-Angela and Tom P., Marin, CA

"I
wanted to tell you just how much we LOVED our stay in your houses
and on your wonderful island!! We had a blast - the restaurants
you suggested were awesome - especially Pescatore - it was my
personal favorite....the "Blue Book" you have in the cottage is
a tour guide beyond belief....we had only one disappointment really....that
we just didn't have enough time to do all that we wanted to do
(that just means we need to come back again!)." -Pamela
J., Carrollton, TX

"We loved
the house and had a wonderful stay. We hope to come back! Thanks

"Thank
you very much for the chance to stay at 8Mangos. It is a delightful
vacation spot and we truly enjoyed ourselves..." -David

"Our
family thoroughly enjoyed our stays at your houses. They are lovely,
very well provisioned, and situated in spectacular settings. I
continue to conjure up the images of the black lava yards and
cliffs and blue ocean in my mind's eye and to conjure up the sounds
of the crashing surf and blowing palm leaves and leaflets in my
mind's ear...We managed to squeeze in lots of activities with
the top four favorites as: viewing the four, frolicking humpback
whales from the deck of 8 Palms; snorkeling in the Kapoho tidal
pools; viewing the red, glowing lava flows of Pu'u O'o at night
in the Hawaiian Volcanoes National Park; and hiking through the
rain forests with hugh tree ferns and then across the lava-encrusted
Kilauea-iki crater. One outstanding personal experience for me
was to go to see the new black sand beach beyond Kalapana. From
my visit to the Big Island in 1966, I have a photo of the absolutely
beautiful black sand beach at Kalapana (and I even have some souvenir
sand!). Now it is under 75 feet of lava. Quite incredible to see
how dramatically Mother Nature can do her geological thing in
such a short time. We will definitely come back and stay for a
longer time. We loved Hilo and its much less developed ambiance
as you had described." -Roberta
S., Carlisle, MA
|
|
"Just
wanted to let you know we all had a very enjoyable stay at your
house and it was nice to have run into you there. All of us arrived
as scheduled later that day - and there was a humpback whale breaching
about to greet us! How did you plan that? Your Island hosts (John
and Arlene) were very helpful with the few questions we had."

"We had
a wonderful time and really enjoyed your lovely home. Thanks so
much. We will keep you in mind for future trips." -Jeanne

"What
an awesome adventure. The house was everything we expected and
then some. It is a big house, but it feels like a home. Sunrise
from 8Mangos is incredible. We looked forward to it everyday.
My mother-in-law found the kitchen to be very complete. She even
used the bread maker once! The cottage is more like a big one-bedroom
house. It was perfect for our friends. Thank you for suggesting
it. We intend to return next year and will call to reschedule.
Our only recommendation is you add a barbecue." -Andrew
M., San Francisco, CA
RESPONSE: We added a barbecue.
Great suggestion! Thanks, Karri & Matt

"We really
had a good time in Hawaii, and definitely hope to return some
day. We also really appreciated the space that we had in both
homes. Thanks again for the book that you had sent to us. It was
extremely helpful and very accurate. We carried it with us every
where we went and I don't think that we would have seen even half
of what we did without it!" -Cheri
W., Calgary Alberta, Canada

"What
a fantastic home you have. 8 Mangos is such a comfortable home
filled with the spirit of aloha...We really did have a great time,
loved the home, and would recommend it to anyone planning a trip
to the Hilo area. The warm pond was really great. Thanks for the
tip." -David

"What
a wonderful house! I loved sitting on the lanai and viewing the
white water coastline. Such a relaxing experience...a safe distance
from the stress of ordinary life! At night we used the sun porch
quite a bit. I found the house to be very spacious, comfortable,
and clean. Please pass our thanks along to Arlene and John. They
were exceptionally nice and friendly. Next time we'll bring another
couple to share the place." -Mary D., San Jose, CA

"Thanks
for squeezing us in at the last-minute. We could not have asked
for a better house if we planned in advance! I think we hit most
of the major attractions, but would like more time to explore
next time visit. Good location. Will be calling with advanced
notice. Thanks again." -Maureen

"Thanks again for everything. The house was amazing. We will be sure to tell anyone we know how great it is if their travels take them to the Big Island." -Dustin B., Lawrence, KS (April, 2009) |
| "Just
to let you know we had a wonderful time in your house. A beautiful
location for sure and very calm and peaceful. Hope the cleaning
team found it OK - it looked good to us. We thought that the Volcano
Park was superb - I'd forgotten how good state parks can be (we
lived in Maryland for 2 years about 30 years ago!) We did the Crater
Rim walk which was great. We also liked the thermal swimming pool
and the village of Pahoa. It's tempting to become a hippy and live
there! Thanks for arranging everything at short notice. Our problem
is we're so far away; 10.5 hours London to LA, 5.5 hrs to Honolulu
and 50 mins to Hilo! Best regards," -Kevin and Ann H., -London,
England |
| "What
a beautiful home with a beautiful view! We had all kinds of weather
and we loved it. We had family here in town and it was great visiting
them and exploring the Big Island. We will definitely come back.
We also just loved sitting on the "lanai" and enjoying
the surf and sunshine. Very relaxing and we needed it! Thank you~
" -Tyler and Christy P., Newport Beach, CA |
| "This
place has a serious problem.... You have to leave! One week is not
enough. A person is torn between staying here at "home"
and going out exploring the island. Our favorites were: 1) the volcanically
heated warm pond, 2) the tide pools, 3) all the lava and lava glowing
at night, 4) the botanical gardens, 5) green sand beach and the
southernmost tip... It's a desert so take water and sunscreen!,
6) Harrington's Restaurant and Ken's House of Pancakes, 7) Saddle
Road, and 8) Place of Refuge was totally awesome. Thanks Karri and
Matt. We'll be back as residents." -Mark and Patsy, Vevay,

| "Thank
you so very, very much for allowing us to share a small part of
8 Palms. It was like heaven on earth. We all just ooohed and awed
at the view. We saw whales and 2 got really close to the cliff.
We would go out running and walking and used the roads as trails.
What a place! I'm speechless! (my friends say that's impossible
but it worked.) We did the run (Great Aloha) in Honolulu, along
with the Silver Streak Run for seniors and returned home to 8 inches
of snow and 4 degrees. We're ready to return to Hawaii. Thanks for
putting up with us and for sharing with us. We will return! Thanks
also for the fresh flower arrangement on the dining table. It was
so beautiful and lasted so long, it was still beautiful when we
left. We all just loved your 8 Palms house & we hope we never
get too old to get there!" -Richard and Freida H., Robert
and Barbara V., and Calvin and Hazel E., -Tulsa, OK |

"Thank
you for your kindness and fine hospitality. We appreciated all
the extra things left inside the house. The house was spotlessly
clean when we arrived, which we were exceptionally grateful for
as this was a major source of concern for my wife. We were all
able to relax and start our vacation from the moment we walked
through the door. The fresh flowers and note were a welcoming
touch. We thoroughly enjoyed our Big Island stay at 8 Palms, and
will be returning during whale season next year. With sincere
thanks-" -Wayne and Donna H., San Diego, CA

"I've
never enjoyed a trip so much! Thank you for making your Palms
house available to us. We witnessed a mother whale and her baby
playing in the ocean right in front of the house. It was an incredible
and captivating show. We watched them frolic and play for nearly
3 hours from the lanai. The dolphins skipped by later in the day,
and my son spotted a large sea turtle while walking along the
coastline. What a fantastic wildlife experience. The house was
so cool and comfortable, day and night. The gentle winds seems
to blow in both directions throughout the day. This was our first
trip to the Big Island, but certainly not our last. Thank you
for the information on the new road to the Volcano Park. We packed
dinner in the cooler and spent the evening watching the most magnificent
glow. Please enroll us in your returning guest program. We intend
to come back this winter. Many mahalos to you and Matt!"
-Jan F. & Family, Portland, OR

"Your
place is incredible! Thank you for having it available. We tried
to tread lightly and leave it in good shape. Let me know if anything
was unacceptable. It was an absolutely great space for us. What
I loved the most was the home feel instead of the rental fee we
had on Kauai. Tile floors, real towels, and cookware, and thank
you for ceiling fans. I love the ocean but the air really bugs
me. Only complaint was no local channels and we could have watched
our Seattle Mariners a couple of times. Thanks again and know
I'll recommend to friends." -Matt L., Seattle, WA

|
"Just
wanted you to know how much we enjoyed staying at Palms. We were
very comfortable there. What a beautiful view of the ocean! Each
time I walked through the front door, I was impressed with the
magnificent sight of the ocean just beyond the balcony. I think
I would have been content to just sit and watch for turtles and
dolphins, but with so much to see and do on the island, our family
kept on the go most of the time. Hawaii is breathtaking. It was
great to be within walking distance to Sea Watch where our other
family members were staying. We had a wonderful time visiting
one another and exploring the island as a family. We would all
like to return to Hawaii one day. I will definitely be recommending
8Palms and a vacation in Hawaii to all my friends. Thank you again."
-Dianne A., MA.

|
"Had
a great return stay. Thanks again! We combed the south side of
the island on this trip. We enjoyed the new video library. Just
a suggestion, you might consider adding some foreign films. We're
going to try the 8Mangos house next year for a change of scenery."
-Jonathan K., Phoenix, AZ

"A much
belated but heartfelt Mahalo a Nui for accommodating us at your
8Hawaii Beaches and 8Palms vacation homes! Arranging our stay
through you made our journey all the more special. Yes, our journey
was successful and powerful beyond wonder. We hiked to Haena/Shipman
Beach and returned so very transformed, healed, restored, and
at peace. Yes, we were able to honor the life, memory, and hula
of Hopae! The hike to Haena Beach was such an adventure on many
levels and the energy in Hilo and Kea'au is significantly thick,
dense, present. The trailhead began where Beach Road ends, south
of Kaloli Road. It's also become known as King's Trail, Old Puna
Trail too. We even walked through a nene sanctuary and were blessed
to see several nene birds. My soul found infinite and priceless
peace; I will now dance in a spirit I feel is true and good. Mahalo,
Karri!" -Colleen and Bobby N., Los Angeles, CA

"Thanks
so much! The house was lovely. We enjoyed the slow pace and beauty

"What
a beautiful home you have in 8 palms. We had a wonderful time
there. We did feel at home. Thank you for caring for us while
we were staying in your home. I've rented many vacation homes,
but never did I have the homeowner call and see how everything
was. I will be back." -Annette L., Daly City, CA

"The
house was wonderful. We had great weather, it rained mostly at
night, and was nice during the day. Roy had a great time fishing
off the cliff, but didn't catch much until "Uncle Al"
showed him the tricks. We fell in love with Hilo and the Paradise
Park area...Everyone we met was so nice and friendly. We can't
wait to go back." -Bonnie
B., Cambria, CA

"Thank
you for a lovely home for our recent stay in Paradise Park. We

"I want
to let you know that the trip was great and the house was wonderful.
It was so nice to site on the deck and listen to the ocean-- my

"The
8 Palms house was just as perfect for 2 as it was for 8. We thoroughly
enjoyed our stay. My wife loved the kitchen and the view from
every window is unbelievable. We liked the new video library...much
faster than driving to Blockbuster! I caught my first fish right
in the backyard. We will be sending you a picture soon. Lastly,
please thank Arlene. She was very nice and helpful." -Tony

"Thank
you so much for the use of 8 Palms. We have never felt so relaxed.

Thanks!" -Susan

"We had
a great stay at 8 Palms. The house provided (all 7 of) us with
a comfortable accommodation. We saw whales right in front of the
house three times (what a lovely disruption to lunch!) and once
down the coast about a half mile. We also saw some off the Kona
Coast. My wife and one of the children saw turtles. The house
is very well equipped. It was good to be able to cook for ourselves
most of the time....Again, we enjoyed our stay at 8 Palms and
would be glad to recommend it to anyone." -James
W., Heathfield, Australia

"Hi...We
just got home and I loved being in the house watching whales and

"We saw
turtles off the porch on Sunday morning...Thanks again for the
use of 8 Palms. We had a terrific time. It's a lovely place."

"Our
family very much enjoyed Hilo. We [explored] the entire island
in 7 days. We think Hilo side is more beautiful than Kona side,
maybe we like the green. We liked your beach house. In the beginning
we had some difficulty sleeping because of the sound of the waves.
Each one of our family has pages of unforgettable memories. One
week is just enough for the big island. I will introduce 8 Palms
to friends and church members. Again, we really enjoyed staying
at the beach house." -William
S., Pasadena, CA

"I just
got back from my long visit to Hawaii. We enjoyed 8 Palms so much.

"I just
wanted you to know that we had a great time in Hawaii. The weather
was really nice in Hilo when we stayed there. We really loved
the house, especially my mom. People were very nice over there,
especially John, the care taker. He stopped to make sure we were
doing fine a couple of times. We also spoke to William next door,
but didn't get to say goodbye. Golfing in Hawaii was more difficult
than it is in Michigan. More elevation and wind made it hard.
I had a good time with my parents and we all enjoyed it very much.
Thank you again for everything, and hope to visit the house some
day again." -Motoyuki I., Northville, MI

"We enjoyed

"Thanks
again for letting us stay at the beach house in Hilo. My family

"This
was our first experience with a "vacation house." You've made
it very pleasant and enjoyable. And once we got here... WOW!! Spotlessly
clean - exactly as advertised! We would sit all day and watch the surf.
The two houses together (Mangos and Orchid) made the perfect spot for
our family. Our family pictures taken on the rocks in front will make
lifelong memories for the four generations who were here. Thank you
for providing the perfect place!" -John and Nancy S., Kenai,
AK
"We
had a very enjoyable Hilo vacation. This house is just right and so
easy to live in." - Pat and Ed, Prosser, WA
"What
a wonderful place to stay, a dream come true. Ocean view and being lulled
to sleep with ocean crashing. We had a wonderful time." -Steven
R., Corona, CA
"8
Orchids has been a true respite from the busy world. We have thoroughly
enjoyed our stay here in your generously furnished cottage. We had little
rain- most days were sunny and breezy. We saw whales many times from
the lava "beach." Your info and books were very helpful in
planning our trip. Sound system was great! Hope to come back someday.
Mahalo" -Tom and Gerri K., Dorr, MI
"The
Orchid cottage is really nice. Everything is quite functional. We spent
most of our time sightseeing and shopping in and around Hilo. The night
hike at the lava flow was adventurous but challenging. We started our
trip ar 6:00 p.m. and did not get home until after 1:00 am. We were
dead tired. We also enjoyed the Japanese restaurant. The sashimi and
saimin were out of this world. The housekeeper was very nice, but I
forget her name. She worked very hard to get the house ready for us.
All and all, it was a very nice stay. Thank you for your hospitality."
-Edwin and Frances, San Ramon, CA
"A
nice stay, such a gorgeous location. I LOVE the cliffs. This was such
a great house to end our Big Island stay. Don't miss the Champagne pond
- clear warm water and fish & turtles." -Rachel R., Atlanta,
Georgia
"Thanks
so much. We both loved this house, so clean and everything we could
possibly need was right here." -Ralph and Fran R., Pottstown,
PA
"Absolutely
perfect vacation- Most well equipped house I've ever seen! Would do
it again tomorrow." -Rollo S., Houston, TX
"We
had a wonderful stay at the Orchid house. We were able to see lots of
Hilo and Puna sights as well as the Volcano Park. The house was SO CLEAN
and WELL EQUIPPED! We ate dinner here several nights instead of going
out. Beautiful shoreline. Thanks so much for your hospitality".
-Julie and Steve, Ellicott City, MD
"I
came to the Orchid house for the first of a two week stay in Hawaii,
a birthday present to myself. It has been a great stay! I love the cleanliness
and homeliness of the cottage. I thoroughly enjoyed the quiet neighborhood
and the peace and serenity. I rarely saw any people, or heard any traffic
outside. I was fascinated by the lava formations along the cliffs. I
was even fascinated by the gecko who made his appearance to first night
I arrived. I understand it is a symbol of friendship and good luck.
Thank you for a great stay... oops let me rephrase that MAHALO for a
great stay!" Eve L., Clinton, MD
"We
moved over to the Orchid cottage from the Mangos house (next door) for
our second week on the Big Island. It is great to be here for a real
relaxing time in Hawaii in a non-tourist setting. The lava flow formations
are fascinating. I walked up the road and found a partial lava tube
where it must have flowed a long time ago. HPP (Hawaiian Paradise Park)
is a great place to get the real fee of Hawaii and to live like a local.
This place is convenient to all the "sites to see." The south
coastline is beautiful, even on a rainy day. Thanks for the convenience
of a home on vacation." -Gary and Louise C., Carpenteria, CA
"Thanks
for letting us stay at this really pretty oceanview home! I was really
great. We appreciate it."- La Pietra Basketball Team, Oahu
"We
enjoyed our quiet, clean, relaxing few days here. The weather was perfect
as well as the beaches, especially Richardson and Ahalanui hot springs
park and pool. The Catholic Church in Pahoa (Sacred Heart) was extremely
warm and friendly - serving breakfast snack (pastries & sushi &
coffee and fruit) following 8:00 am daily services. We saw and swam
with our 1st sea turtle at Richardson beach today. Enjoyed a wonderful
shop in Pahoa called "Puna Style" - beautiful jewelry, clothing,
house decor- all extremely cheap! We enjoyed our 25th Anniversary here."
-Joe and Donna W., Walla Walla, WA
"This
adorable cottage is like a cabin in the tropical forest. I especially
enjoyed walking in the back of the Mangos house on the lava field to
watch the ocean. (To all: Be careful not to step on the tiny snails
at the edge which get thrown up by the wave action. Respect mother nature
and do not collect anything from Hawaii that is a natural resource.)
Some very interesting events happened during my visit. I am grateful
for the experiences. Samantha and Richard were both very kind and helpful.
Peace and aloha," -Debra H., Santa Barbara, CA
"Thanks
so much. We had a wonderful stay, and finally found a lot to buy in
HPP. Mike and I really appreciated your allowing us to stay the extra
week. It made all the difference. The house was perfect for our needs.
Please thank the cleaning crew for the outstanding presentation. We
plan to call you (well in advance, next time!) when we're ready to start
building." - Alice and Mike J., Chico, CA
"Great
house. We had an awesome adventure on the Big Island. It was so nice
to return home each night to the Orchid house. We added two videos to
your library. We met a lot of friendly people in the neighborhood, and
the Mango guests were from our home town! Thanks again." -Mark
and Michelle O., Spokane, WA
"We
had a wonderful stay at the Orchid cottage. It was just perfect for
our family. The house was much larger than we thought it would be and
fully equipped too. We appreciate how clean and nice this house was
on our arrival. It is a very affordable home, well located and peaceful.
I loved the birds singing every morning. So much more private and well
equipped than a hotel room. Thank you for making the Orchid house available
for us. We truly enjoyed our stay on the Hilo side of the island, and
look forward to returning again and again. We will recommend your homes
to friends and family. Be back soon!" -Holland family, from
all over Texas
"In
a word... fantastic! Already talking about returning to the Orchid house.
We may have to move next door to the Mangos house if we come back with
the kids!" -Jason & Pam M., Campbell, CA
Lilikoi

"Our family trip to Hawaii
was fabulous! What a wonderful spot on the planet. The house was easy
for our family to be in and it was a great place for our daughter who
has mobility challenges. I thought there was a ground level entry as
well as steps from the way the pictures look on the website. Fortunately
Katie is not wheelchair bound so it did not pose a problem. Inside the
house there was lots of space and the all bathrooms are roomy making
it easy to assist anyone with mobility issues. We all really appreciated
the casual feel of the house and the swimming and snorkeling at the
beaches along the road in front of the house was superb. Yes, we too,
saw many turtles, fish of every description, a monk seal who has taken
up residency at the sand beach (they believe she is due to have a pup
in August)!, and whales and spinner dolphins put on a spectacular show
for us a couple of days in a row. Our travels around the island were
easy and full of much adventure. We all loved Hilo's old town feel and
art deco buildings and everyone was very friendly to us. Again, the
house is fantastic and roomy and easy to be in and we loved it's casual
comfortable feel. The space and decorating were a catalysts for naturally
falling into "living there" for the time we were there. We are a family
of wanna be chefs so we cooked some great family meals together in the
fantastic kitchen! We were grateful for the use of the boogie boards
and the wonderful beach towels. Having access to the washer and dryer
at the end of a long beach day was a Godsend. We will recommend Lilikoi
to others, in fact, we have passed information on to a couple of folks
here so you may get some more bookings from this part of the world in
the future. I also want to commend you on how easy you made the booking
happen, for the speed at which you responded to emails and forwarded
us the info package and the keys. Thanks so much!!!" -Denise

"I can't think of a more
relaxing vacation home. Great weather all week..." -Dan B.,
Vancouver, WA

"This house and location
are perfect, but of course the time went by too fast. We can't wait
to come back." Kathie Y., Costa Mesa, CA

"This is a VERY
comfortable house for a family to be in (2 parents, 2 adult children,
2 teenage children). The water out front and at Richardson beach are
fantastic for snorkeling - the easy access black sand beach was occupied
by a monk seal! We saw turtles, fantastic fish, heard and saw whales
and spinner dolphins. It was spring break for the local community, so
lots of family gatherings and picnics- great to be amongst those who
live here. Everyone was VERY welcoming. We loved Hilo's art noveau
and retro (50's) building (and older). The walk among the banyan trees
- above Rainbow Falls is worth seeing. The fish ponds are fantastic.
The sand beaches on the west side are worth the drive. Kona is cosmopolitan
if that is what you are looking for. See the Volcano, lava flow, and
the Observatory (Mauna Kea). The Hilo farmer's market will get you great
veggies. The island food store is better than Safeway except for OJ.
Were not able to source local eggs at any store - nor the market - but
folks folks do have their own little flocks here... so it must be possible!
Hilo is quiet on Sunday - so don't plan it as a town day. It's a family
and God day here. Feral cats are everywhere and cared for by the local
folks here and there. Coconut ice cream made here is mmm good! Papayas,
mangos, pineapples, and avocados - exquisite! There is much to
see and discover. Wear sunscreen - even if it is cloudy and take H20
on all outings. Aloha" -The Lawson family, Vancouver Island,
BC Canada

"Mahalo from the Shiiba
family. We grew up in Hilo almost 40-50 years ago. Sharing time together
at your beautiful home has been wonderful. The setting is open, peaceful,
and welcoming. We hope to return to your home again in the near future,
perhaps at one of your other homes as well. Mahalo" -Shiiba
family, Portland, OR

"I LOVE the charm
of the Lilikoi house. The beautiful tree and vegetation is wonderful...There
is another species of toad around. I believe its nickname is cave toad
but not sure. If you go out exploring at night, be sure to take a flashlight
so you don't step on any frogs. Make sure you go to the free admission
education facility called Mokupapapa Discovery Center. It will teach
you about the remote northwestern Hawaiian Islands which are now a National
Monument called Papalanaumokuakea. It's a neat place with a 2500 gallon
aquarium, next door to Cafe Pesto (yummy food!). Thank you so much,
Karri, for your kindness in sharing you home. It was extra special (especially
after our cat story :). Best wishes to everyone and warmest aloha"
-Debra H., Santa Barbara, CA

"We had the most fabulous time in
your wonderful home. We all felt very cozy and really appreciated
all that you have done to make it comfortable and convenient to stay.
We will definitely be back." -Darin B. and family, San Diego,
CA

"We arrived for my sister's wedding.
The house and location were ideal with the large front windows facing
the ocean. Every morning we lined up the chairs, and sat facing the
ocean as the sun came up over the water. The Lilikoi house feels like
home, and has a very welcoming feel to it. We all thoroughly enjoyed
our stay, and are bummed to be leaving. We're all hoping to return
very soon. Aloha and Mahalo!!!" -Tom, Mary Kaye, and Heidi
L., Salt Lake City, UT

"This is the nicest beach house we've
ever stayed in, and we've rented quite a few over the years. You have
done a top notch job. The house and yard is fantastic. In addition
to all the amenities, I appreciate how clean the house was on our
arrival. The whole rental experience was A+. The location is phenomenal.
You can expect us to return, and we will certainly refer." -
Jon S., San Francisco, CA

"Thanks again for your
help in planning our Hilo trip. It was a great experience for both my
Mother and my Aunt to visit their hometown and birthplace together...
The Lilikoi house was even better than expected. One of your previous
guests said that the pictures on the web site don't do it justice and
I would agree! The location, across from the lovely Leleiwi Beach Park
could not be better. We really enjoyed the well equipped kitchen and
because I'm an avid cook, we were able to put it to good use. Hilo has
changed a lot since my wife and I last visited around 20 years ago.
We really enjoyed visiting the Hilo Farmer's Market and the Tsunami
Museum, particularly since my Mother was a survivor of the tsunami in
1946. We look forward to visiting Hilo again someday and hopefully staying
at the Lilikoi House." -Jim A., Mission Viejo, CA

"Wanted to thank you for
sharing your beautiful Lilikoi Beach House. My family and I really enjoyed
the house. The wedding was beautiful and my cousin Ledward Kaapana played
music. We all had such a wonderful time and it was so sad to leave such
a beautiful and warm home. The reason it was so important that we rent
a beach house in Hilo was because of my father's health. The last time
we all made a trip to Hilo we stayed at (local hotel) and my father
was pulled in so many different directions that it took a toll on him.
He ended up in the hospital. So this time I decided that if the family
wanted to visit with him they would have to come to the beach house
to do so. My Dad was so relaxed and got a lot of rest while we were
there. He said he wanted to stay there at the house from now on. The
Lilikoi house would be the kind of home I would build if was to live
in Hilo. It was a great gathering place for our family.... Mahalo once
again for sharing your beautiful "Lilikoi House". We look forward to
staying there again! Sincerely," -Jo & Frank H., Woodbridge,
VA

"This house was exactly
as we pictured it inside -only better! The photos on the web site were
good, but the house felt a lot more spacious and inviting when we stepped
through the front door. (You might consider retaking the exterior pictures
of the house from the side to include the patio.) We were delighted
to find the house was so spacious -much larger than it appeared on the
web. It was a perfect fit for our family of 8. We spent most of our
time in the yard or at the beach in front of the house. The kids enjoyed
the boogie boards, surf boards (please thank Claire for us), snorkeling
equipment, video games, movies, and all the extras at the house. The
people in this part of the island have made us feel so welcome. We are
already discussing plans to return next summer." Kate
and Scott R., San Anselmo, CA

"We had a wonderful time
at the Lilikoi house. We found it well stocked with great DVDs, books
and games. The kitchen was a dream. We enjoyed the barbecue, relaxing
under the tree and watching the surfers. Comfort and ease never found
in a hotel. Thank you." Walter and Sara B., Gillette, NJ

"What a great vacation
house! We quickly started calling it "home" at the end of
a day's activities (i.e. "Let's go home). I think that's because
this place has all the comforts of ...well... HOME. Our trips highlights
were the Hawaii Botanical Gardens, snorkeling at the Captain Cook monument
and swimming with the sea turtles at the beach in front of the house.
Thanks for sharing this piece of paradise with us." Bob and
Bonnie B., Los Alamos, NM

"Our stay here was great!
Compared to the hustle and bustle of our time spent in Honolulu the
Lilikoi house and Hilo were a wonderful contrast. It was so relaxing
to sit and watch the waves roll in. Thank you for sharing this house
and for making Hilo feel like home." David and Jean P., Dallas,
TX

"This was our first trip
to the islands, and the experience has convinced us to come back very
soon. We appreciate the hospitality we have been shown in Hilo. The
Lilikoi house was one of our favorite portions of the trip. It is such
a relaxing way to end, what was usually, very busy days. We will take
many memories from the Big Island with us, but one of our favorites
will be our relaxing evenings listening to the surf while enjoying the
many amenities of your fantastic vacation home. Thanks for sharing it
with us." Phil and Gale R., Las Cruces, NM

"Kids loved Leleiwi Beach
in front of the house. We saw a turtle on our first day and the kids
got to swim with several. This is a great house. Very comfortable and
clean. We appreciated all the extras (snorkeling stuff, beach towels,
movies, games, etc.) The weather was perfect and access to both beaches
was so nice. We can't wait to come back. Thank you again." Owen
and Chris F., Denver, CO
"Great island! Great beds!
Great kitchen! Great house! Great Scott it's time to leave! Hope to
return sometime soon." Donna, Pierce, Mikaya and Jamin A., Calgary,
Canada

"Lovely comfortable house.
I loved the views out of all the windows. The trees and view of the
ocean out the front windows and the plants and leaves in the back. This
is my favorite part of Hilo and I want to return." Kay A., El
Cerito, CA

"Thank you for sharing
this beautiful home. I loved the old style Hilo feel. I especially loved
the trees and plants around the house. What an amazing Plumeria tree
in the back - It's huge. And the Monkey Pod tree with the view of the
ocean is beautiful. Don't change a thing. It was a peaceful and relaxing
trip that I will remember and cherish always. Such a nice change from
Hong Kong." Alicia D., Hong Kong

"We so enjoyed staying
here - your house is lovely and just right for the seven of us. We loved
the view in the morning and the great swimming across the street at
Leleiwi Beach and Richardson Beach. Aloha and Mahalo." Heald
family, Bridgeport, CT

"This was our fourth trip to the Big
Island but never in such spacious accommodations. Again we had a great
time, much swimming and snorkeling across at Richardson Beach. I finally
worked up the nerve to jump at Kalae (no whales to ride - whew!) Mahalo
Claire for recommending Fuzzy for kayaking. We had a great time in
the bay." Ozlowski family, Richardson, TX

"The house is absolutely perfect.
The setting is absolutely gorgeous and our hosts were wonderful. I
hope to be back soon, maybe permanently :). Claire and family are
the most genuine, sweetest people you ever could know. The weather
was perfect, water was gorgeous, snorkeling- awesome. I can say that
you couldn't get me to the Kona side after knowing this Hilo gem exists.
I'm so sad to leave! Thank you for a wonderful experience." -Lori
L., Carlsbad, CA

"Ruben Jr. brought the
family to Lilikoi from a dream vacation, and it certainly was a dream.
I went snorkeling for the first time and am now addicted for life.
We were last here in 1978 and already knew that Hilo was the perfect
side of the island, even though we ventured to the Kona just long
enough for Ruben Jr to hook a 137-1/2 pounf yellowfin tuna. What a
rush it was to watch the battle and the win! We'll be back."
-Mary L., Carlsbad, CA

"What a great place!
The house is beautiful. The location is great & the Big Island is
packed with exciting adventures. We stayed on both sides of the island
and we all agreed that Hilo is the best side- so charming and lush...
the water, the sea turtles, diverse vegetation and friendly people were
all great... not to mention the farmer's market. White pineapple, mango
and ice cream just down the road. Ken's House of Pancakes serving pancakes
with coconut syrup. What a treat! We bought 4 jar to take home. Rainbow
falls...we loved it! Thank you for sharing your space and beautiful
home (and also your monkey pod tree)." The Humes-Best family,
Missoula, MT

"There isn't enough paper
to tell you how much we enjoyed our stay- thanks to your wonderful Ohana
and Aloha. We will have you in our hearts and perhaps soon we will enjoy
each other again. We are from California, Hawaii, and Tonga. Aloha and
Ofa a Tu- May you always be surrounded by love that you so freely give."
-Marilyn, Henry, Laura, Andrea, Ashleigh, Don, Deanna, Kya, Hanna,
and Roo.

"We had a great time on
the Big Island. One week just wasn't enough time! We saw the volcano
(but no lava flow), tasted interesting wines at the winery, drove to
Kapoho and explored the various beaches and views, went on a submarine
ride, tool the fairwinds snorkel cruise (very fun, clear waters, kids
loved it), visited farmer's market (twice), tourd the Lyman Museum,
flumed da ditch (also fun, interesting), and went to :out (Richardson's)
beach many times to snorkel and play. At the end (or middle) of each
day, it was so nice to come back to our "home." The views
from each room were absolutely amazing (even from the master shower!).
A couple of times, we picked up goodies (beef bulgolgi, teri chix, tuna
poki, etc.) at the KTA Superstore and BBQ'd im "our" yard.
We also tried local restaurants: Kuhio Grill (very good), Dons Grill
(also good with big portions), Cafe Pesto (yummy Italian pizza/salad),
and Cafe 100. Thanks for providing such a wonderful place to stay! Can't
wait to come back again." -Ron, Sarah, Tiana and Cami I., San
Diego, CA

"Second time on Hawaii,
with a 10 week old, 2 year old....Got to spend a lot of time appreciating
this house and the fantastic views. Very relaxing visit this time. We
ate a lot of local food (plate lunches at Verna's and Mamo Cafe). We
went to Richardson's beach every day. Snorkeled every day. Saw 6 sea
turtles in one day. Went to Kahalu'u beach, Kona Blue Sky Coffee Co.,
and ate at Huggo's on the Rocks- Great fish & chips. We love Hilo
and the local people who make you feel at home. See you next time. Mahalo!"
-Kris, Liana, Karissa, Maggie and Meredith M., Santa Rosa, CA

"We had a wonderful stay
here. The house had everything we needed and we enjoyed family meals
in the quiet, exotic setting. We enjoyed hiking the Volcano and waterfalls
(I have bruises to prove it!). The swimming and sea life in front of
the house were wonderful experiences. We saw three (3) sea turtles.
If you go to Kona to snorkel with Sea Quest, be sure and tell Dusty
"hello" and welcome him to your family. Now we're off to Oahu.
Thank you!" -Robinson family, Derby, KS
